Does Twitter do a business good? Week 5

Business name: check. Business email: check. Business website: check. Business Twitter account? Um, eh, well...

Social networking can be overwhelming. Between Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, this new form of networking and marketing can be confusing and time consuming, but I'm telling you: it's worth the effort.

Each Tuesday, I'm going to share with you a sampling of some New Jersey companies, organizations and entrepreneurs who have embraced Twitter and made the social networking site work well for them. And you'll hear from different "Tweeps" to learn how Twitter works for them. While you're browsing the list below, take a look at the quality of their Tweets and frequency of @ replies. It's not just about making announcements and sharing links. It's also about customer service and keeping a constant dialog and communication with your "followers."

From Lucy Banta, Managing Editor of NJ Family Magazine, @NJFamilyMag: "I Have connected with lots of NJ people and moms from all over. I Am getting requests for specific NJ information, events, & places to go."

From Mike Kivowitz, owner of Creative Consulting & Design, LLC and founder of Bergenation.com, @Bergenation: Twitter can help businesses and organizations "by allowing you to connect with real people on a personal level thus establishing relationships and possibly clients or contacts."

@HiltonShortHill: Short Hills Hilton

@KatisKupcakes: Moorestown cupcake designer, Kati Angelini
@BergenFest: Tastings from the best restaurants in the Bergen area
@JerseyMenus: New Jersey's Dining and Entertainment Guide
@Act2Books: Used book store in Englishtown and Newark

Twitter has helped me find people interested in what I sell (European bead bracelets and accessories), as well as chat with other online retailers. I also use Twitter to send out quick updates about new items and promotions in my eBay store.
