Every week, I trek over to Shop Rite to restock on the usual food staples for my family. Even though there are 3 of us, the cart is usually quite full-stocked with healthy fruit & produce, dinner meat, food for Maddy and the usual 2 boxes of Cheerios.
But what if that was taken away from me? What if my recent supermarket trip would be my last for awhile?
Sadly, food insecurity is a reality for 36 million Americans, 12 million children and 2 million seniors. Hunger is a national and a local problem. But there is a way that you can help and all it requires is a simple comment in this post!
ShopRite Partners in Caring, a community-based hunger fighting initiative started in 1999, has teamed up with General Mills for the “Blog it Forward to Fight Hunger” campaign to recruit bloggers to help spread awareness and encourage their readers to get active. For our efforts, General Mills and ShopRite will donate one box of cereal to a food bank in ShopRite’s trading area for the first 30 people who comment on THIS POST. That is 30 boxes of cereal feeding 30 people or families. How simple is that!
So just to reiterate: All YOU have to do is leave a comment and your job is done. You just donated a box of cereal to someone in need.
Food for thought: Every time a customer purchases products with the ShopRite Partners In Caring shelf tag, they support the brands that support the fight against hunger. At ShopRite, customers are not just filling a grocery bag; they are helping to fill empty bowls for thousands of hungry families in your community.
How does Partners in Caring work?
Companies that have joined ShopRite in the fight against hunger are marked in stores with the ShopRite Partners In Caring shelf label. By choosing these products, ShopRite customers support manufacturers who contribute to the program. Each of the 217 ShopRite stores in the six states that ShopRite serves (New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Maryland) selects qualified local organizations to benefit from the program. These local food charities use their designated funds to acquire supplies at a food bank.
Who is served?
For the past 10 years, the ShopRite Partners In Caring program has donated $2 million annually to local food banks - $20 million to date. ShopRite Partners In Caring dollars service a variety of organizations with feeding capabilities including emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, child care centers, battered women’s shelters, senior programs, drug rehab centers, programs for the mentally and physically disabled, after school programs and other organizations that support those in need in ShopRite communities. In total, it supports 23 regional food banks and more than 1,400 charitable agencies with food or meal components.

I am always happy to see individuals and corps. who are dedicated to serving LOCAL needs. I think we need to take care of the hungry and needy in our own backyards first before we go traipsing all over the globe. Yes, there are hungry children in other countries but, the poor will ALWAYS be with us. Cheerios to Fight Hunger locally is a wonderful idea. Way to go and keep up the great work!!
It's good to see such huge companies giving back.
Happy to leave a comment to fight hunger. Great cause.
