Good coffee around the corner
If you're diving through the Pennington area and you're craving some good coffee, head over to Cornerstone Coffee. With a set-up similar to Starbucks, Cornerstone is larger, serves a variety of lunch specials, and has really good coffee. The setting has ample parking and is near some other fun shopping: Serendipity, The Fresh Fig, Merle Norman, and The Woolly Lamb.
Robyn will "always be around"
Do you remember when you belted out "Always be around" or "Do you know what it takes to love me" in your bedroom or around your house? I do! In the early 90s, Swedish import Robyn had 2 breakaway hits and then disappeared from the US pop scene. While she remained successful in Europe, she was not able to reclaim her hit maker status in the states. Until now! Robyn has a new self titled album out and the music is hot! My favorite is "Every Heartbeat" which you can listen to on her Myspace page or view the video on YouTube. The video and the album cover remind me of the 1927 movie Metropolis, but it's still very cool. You can purchase it now on Amazon at the import price or wait until Dec. 4th 2007 for the US release date. I hope her album receives as good a reception as it did in Europe.
Women looking to network
Today I attended the Women Interested in Networking (W.I.N) lunch at Tessara's restaurant in Hamilton. For just $15, you can enjoy a delicious lunch and swap business cards with other professional women. Find an organizer for your cluttered closet, talk with a loan officer, set up an appointment with a chiropractor or personal trainer. Even if you don't have a business to promote, but perhaps would like to network for an event, this is a great opportunity to meet other women in the area.
W.I.N is a non-committal group that is run by Terri Petry, publisher of Mercer County Woman Newspaper. The group meets the 3rd Thursday of each month and is open to anyone. You can go every month or just one time. It's your choice. There are door prizes and plenty of free brochures and materials for attendees.
I went to promote my math and computer tutoring and had some interest in both. It's a great way to spend a Thursday lunch hour and I can guarantee there is someone there for everyone!
Bulk Mailing FYI
For anyone looking into reduced and/or bulk mailing rates, here are some things you should know (that I did not):
- There is a $175 application fee for a permit and
- A $175 permit fee
- The reduced rate is $.245
Such a pet peeve
Ugh, I hate this...it's such a pet peeve! When I was heading to my car after class today, one of the food service staffers was carting boxed salads and water across campus and took a pause to light up a cigarette! There she went blowing spoke across the salads. Gross! Couldn't she wait! Who wants cigarette smoke lurking in their healthy food! Such a pet peeve!

The Super Bowl in New York or Philly?
I had an assignment for Event Planning class write a hypothetical proposal to have the Super Bowl in either New York or Philadelphia. I chose Philly for the mere reason that I thought New York is just way too populated and busy to have a week long affair. But the class was very mixed: pro-New York, anti-New York, pro-Philly, pro-Queens, etc. Some of the arguments that came up against New York were:
- Parking situation around Giants Stadium-they already have overflow for regular games
- The overload of people during Super Bowl week will displace too many New Yorkers
- Security concerns-people will be turned away by fear
- New Yorkers are not strangers to big events and swarms of people coming in.
- Largest police force in the PLANET!
- It's New York-there is so much besides football to keep the VIPs busy
- Small city, more room
- Lincoln Field has tons of parking; public transportation feed right to the location
- Close to NJ (Atlantic City) and New York
- Old City and Penn's Landing ideal for entertaining
Resist the temptation and just cancel the junk mail!
In an effort to reduce the weekly magazine recycling and to quell my constant temptations to page shop, I looked into how I can cancel catalogs and other junk mail.
There are some services where you can pay a fee to cancel all junk mail, but that's another expense I don't need. What I did find useful is that most catalog websites have a contact email for the purpose of reducing catalog mailings. All you have to, once a day, is go on the company site and send an email. It won't take long. Yesterday I did L.L. Bean, Eddie Bower, Victoria's Secret, and the ValuePak. Now don't think that just because I'm canceling these catalogs that I don't like the products. Not at all! I mean Victoria's Secret!! Love their stuff! But don't need the temptation!!!
ValuePak and Victoria's Secret both had specific links for reducing mailings (Victoria's is shown above). With the Bean and Eddie, I just sent Customer Service email requests.
Very easy folks. I'll help you out and put the links up whenever I cancel a catalog.

Laundry's New Super Hero
Dashboard flyers tend to just annoy me, but today I found an exception.
When I got to my car today after my first class of the day at Rider, I saw an ad for Captain Laundry, a laundry service out of Trenton that has college rates and plans for Rider and Princeton students. With a 2-day wash 'n' fold turnaround and affordable rates by semester, college students may find Captain Laundry an easier alternative to waiting for a free washer in the dorms. Not to mention, a lot easier than collecting quarters in a container the size of a pencil case. Arranging a pick up can even be done right from your computer by filling out an online form.
Rates are based on 10, 15, 20, and 25 pound orders and plans are separated into 13 week blocks or semesters. For example, for 1 semester of 10 lbs of clothes a week, you pay $148.49. That is about $11.50 per week or 46 quarters. If you're still not sold, thinking that you can spend way less doing it yourself, think of a few of these factors:
- You have to wait by your laundry in the dorm when you could be running an errand, visiting a friend, studying, or napping.
- You have to watch and make sure no one takes your detergent, your money, or worse yet-your clothes!
- You might have to lug your laundry to another dorm when the washers/dryers are all being used.
- The washers/dryers are not top of the line and will brake down.
- You have to find the time in your week to dedicate a few hours to laundry.
For more information, feel free to send them a message or give them a call at 888-98-CAPTAIN.
MTV VJ at Morristown-Beard School
Of course, the year after I leave, Mobeard brings MTV VJ Damien Fahey to school to help celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Middle School and Performing Arts Center. It is by no means, I small affair, but I missed out on some good eye candy too!
Morristown-Beard launched "Ahead with Confidence" in the Spring of '07 to commence their capital campaign for the new construction. I taught in the middle school for 3 years and witnessed the arduous process involved in planning greatly influential buildings.
Congrats, Mobeard on the groundbreaking and scoring an MTV visit!
Get an oil change, save $10!
I love driving Rob's truck and today I get to keep it for a day. The trade-off is that I helped him out by taking it to get an oil change. He goes to Pep Boys out on Rt 1 in Princeton (next to the Palmer Inn). I had a nice surprise after waiting an 1 hour for the car with a $10 rebate. For the month of September, customers can send in for a rebate for a multitude of services including (but not limited to): conventional oil change, high mileage oil change, front brake service and rear disc brake service. Click here for the rebate form or get one from your local Pep Boys (but I'm sure you'll get one, but just in case).

KT Tunstall's Drastic and Fantastic Album Launch
Tunstall's album release comes on the heels of a very busy summer touring schedule including Live Earth and the Today Show. She was also a 2006 nominated artists with "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" up for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. And with the release of her new single, "Hold On" sharing airplay with her 2006 hit single "Suddenly I See," her album is bound to find similar success.
In addition to being a success in the music industry, Tunstall is also devoted to environmental causes and travels in a biodiesel tour bus. Her label, Virgin, is also joining to help her with a "green" album launch.
For a sample of her new album, check out the video for "Hold On."

A tart treat: Lifesavers Fruit Tarts
In order to give my jaw a rest, I stopped chewing my FAVORITE gum (Orbit Sweet Mint). In the meantime, I discovered a pretty decent TEMPORARY replacement.
The Lifesavers brand has put out fruit tarts in cool metallic tins offering two flavor varieties: the purple tin is Grape Berry - Green Apple - Strawberry Watermelon and the orange tin is Watermelon, Cherry Lemonade, Mandarin Orange. I've only tried the purple tin. Oh Yeah, they are tart...very tart! My guess is that the orange tin might be even stronger because of the Lemonade and Orange flavors. One disclaimer: If you accidentally swallow too much of the juices that form in your mouth, it burns a bit. However, I keep going back for more! The tin is is easy to open and even gives you instruction under the lid. Press the middle to open and press the sides to close. Simple enough. You can find these tart treats in any supermarket or CVS type establishment.
A walk through family history: Riverton, NJ
Rob's paternal great-grandparents lived on Bank Ave. in Riverton NJ right along the river. Actually, his grandparents were members of the Philadelphia Biddle family and occupied the now endangered Biddle Mansion . The mansion was built in 1876 and converted to an apartment building in 1962. However, due to poor maintenance, the house is now "considered one of the most threatened historic sites in the state." Along the same row were other "seen better days" homes. I actually did NOT take a picture of the home. We weren't sure which one it was, but I thought that it would not illustrate the beauty of area near the Riverton Yacht Club.
When you drive down Main St. in Riverton towards the river, you are surrounded by historically preserved homes and tree-lined sidewalks. The Riverton Yacht club's stick-style is a nice complement to the history of Riverton and its architecture.
Riverton was established in 1851 by a group of Quakers, including the Biddle's, who wanted summer homes for their families. The appeal of the country with access to the city was most appealing. Some summer dwellers were Joseph Campbell (yes, the soup) and Isaac Clothier(Strawbridges). The group commissioned Samuel Sloan to design and build the village. One of the most influential groups formed in Riverton was the Porch Club. A club for women, the porch club was involved in social improvements but as was instrumental in establishing the first Kindergarten in the country. Today, Riverton is home to about 3,000 people and is neighbor to Palmyra and Cinnaminson. It is a real pedestrian town, but also has a railway giving commuters access to Trenton and Camden.

Listen to: Off the Beat
A cappella music is vocals without accompanying music. Many colleges and universities have A cappella groups: male, female and co-ed. Bucknell, where I went, has the Bison Chips, Silhouettes, Two Past Midnight and Bucknell Unison. For local talent, check out UPenn's ROCK A cappella group, Off the Beat.
Recently blogged by celebrity gossip hound/celebrity rapper Perez Hilton, Off the Beat is an award winning group that blends vocal harmony with Top 40 rock. My favorite is their version of Breathe Me by Sia. Listen to them on MySpace or purchase their CDs at acaTunes.
