I've never really talked at length about my personal endeavors. That was never really the purpose of my blog, but I wanted to share with my readers the new direction that I am taking so it could inspire some of you who are thinking about the same pursuits.
I am not going back to full-time teaching in the fall. Instead, I am continuing my Public Relations Certificate program at Rider University during the day while maintaining my math teaching through tutoring in the afternoons. Since I am not going to have a regular paycheck, I need to earn some income and that is why the tutoring is going to be a major necessity. Thankfully, when I do want to go back to teaching in a school, I can do either public or private school since I have my Teacher of Middle School Math certification. Back to the tutoring....
I have been passively marketing myself for tutoring by placing business cards in supermarkets and local shops. I also have my card featured in the County Woman publication that is available in various shops around Mercer County. But I knew that in order to develop a client base, I needed some more aggressive advertising. Something that was going to be seen by a few hundred people. And that is were J.S. Paluch and Co. came in!
When Rob and I came home from our cruise, we were checking our answering machine and there was a message on there from Lionel Simon, an ad consultant with J.S. Paluch(pronounced Polluck) who had seen my ad in Thomas Sweet Ice Cream shop and wanted to give me a larger marketing base to work with. J.S. Paluch is a company that publishes Catholic church bulletins. For anyone that is Catholic or have attended a Catholic mass, you know how the bulletins make use of 1-2 pages of ad space. It's a great market especially since church is full of families in the area. This was going to be the start I needed to get publicized in a reliable environment.
Tutoring is not my only desirable source of income, but this is what I know what to do: teach and help kids. I have so many other interests (hence the PR certificate, the Bucknell Club of Princeton, and Mrs. Mo's New Jersey), but I have to start with a sure thing. It's establishing the client base which is the hardest. But it's only June 29th. I have July and August until the MoBeard paycheck stops and my new life begins.
If any of you reading this are thinking "how am I going to get my business noticed" and you live in NJ or the PA area near Jersey, give J.S.Paluch a call. They will set you up.

Stage 1 of my new career
I opened Pandora's Box...
I finally got my very own Pandora charm bracelet! (purchased by my lovely mother)
I took my mom over to Charmed by Claire in Cranbury, who is a Gold retailer (carries full line of Pandora charms), and finally got my "starter" bracelet. As you can see, you can pick from Murano glass beads, silver designs, animal shapes, and many more! You can also go all silver (like mine), all gold, or two-tone.
If you want to start your own Pandora bracelet, here are a few tips from Claire:
- Get your wrist measured. You want the bracelet to be about 1/4 in larger to make room for the charms.
- Spacers(first charm on the left) keep the beads from sliding up and down the bracelet. They have an easy open-close clasp.
- You don't really need spacers until you buy more charms. Don't bother with them yet.
- Feel free to get more than 1 bracelet. They are great to stack together. You can then connect them together to make about a 16in necklace.
Once you open Pandora's Charm Box, you unleash the shopping demon-ess inside!

Bermuda Cruise Highlights Preview
Well, we're back from Bermuda and although Rob had to go right back to work, I'm slowly getting into summer vacay mode. It's Day 3 since our return and I'm just getting to download our pictures. You'll have to wait a bit for my full report, but here is a preview of our trip.
Bermuda-via Royal Caribbean, Empress of the Seas
Rob and I sailed out of Norfolk, Va. I would highly recommend to anyone in the Tri-State area to try sailing out of Southern port. The main reason was the people where just nicer and more relaxed than the New York/New Jersey crowd. I think you know what I mean!
I'll give you a taste of:
The beaches, foliage, food and sites around our 2 ports in Bermuda: Hamilton and St. George. I also have pictures from our experience on the ship.
First Stop: Hamilton and a ferry ride over to Kings Wharf

Movie Review
Blockbuster Online reviews
I'm still on my online rental kick and I love it. It takes about 2-3 days to return a movie and then receive a new one. Extremely fast!
Here are my recent views and reviews:
Dead Girl: This all-star cast including Toni Collette, Giovanni Ribisi, Rose Byrne, James Franco, Mary Steenburgen, Marcia Gay Harden, Kerry Washington, and Brittany Murphy tells the story of the brutal murder of a runaway and the ripple effect it has on the community where she is found. The movie is told in a chapter format and replays the events both before and after her death. It was a short movie (for today's standards), but instantly engrossing. You might like this movie if you liked: Memento, The Black Dahlia and Identity.
Brick: Another movie about solving a murder, but set to an entirely different beat. And unlike that traditional high-school flick of parties, sunny California beaches and shopping, this movie gives a glimpse into the dark and twisty reality of the high-school drug underworld. The hero of the sordid tale is Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Third Rock from the Sun, 10 Things I Hate About You) who is tracking down the killer of his ex-girlfriend who had turned to the dark side and disappeared. He quickly finds himself engrossed in the world of crime, seduction, and coverups in the effort to unlock the truth without getting killed. Reviewed as a modern day "film-noir" in the styling of Dashiell Hammett. You might like this movie if you like: River's Edge, Heathers, Alpha Dog, or The Salton Sea.
I Capture the Castle shows have been Law and Order, Cold Case, American Justice, etc). : I do have a lighter and brighter side to me. I am not all morbid like you might think by my previous film choices. I just have a liking for crime dramas...always has (Law & Order, Cold Case, American Justice). Anyway, I have a soft side for romance. In this movie, we meet 2 sisters in 1930s England who have been trapped for more than 10 years in a castle that their father had purchased with the hopes to write the follow-up to his first successful novel. Feeling rammy with the knowledge that they were going nowhere fast, the eldest and more beautiful of the sisters set out to meet a suitor who would save them from despair. Two American men enter the scene and change their lives forever. The beautiful sister makes herself love one of the brothers while he becomes the object of affection by the younger plain narrator. The classic heroine of the movie, the plain Jane, is in search of real love and is instead trying to maintain normalcy among the family that has been swept up by the empty joy of wealth and fortune. By the end, she has felt love and been broken by love, but is hopeful to feel again. You might like this movie if you liked Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Shakespeare in Love, Enchanted April and Mermaids.
I didn't really like: Borat (shock among all shocks....but I find myself saying "Very Nice" all the time!) & Forty Shades of Blue.
Next in my queue: All The Real Girls and I'm With Lucy
Bermuda, Here We Come!
Yeah, so Rob thought he would hate a cruise when we took one for our honeymoon last year, and now we are going out to sea again! (Needless to say, he LOOOOVED the cruise)
Today we are driving down to his uncle's house in Neavitt, MD and then tomorrow morning will continue down to Norfolk, VA where we will board and embark for Bermuda!Last year, we sailed on Norwegian Cruise Lines to the Eastern Caribbean. Bermuda was the last stop on that cruise and hands-down our favorite. This year we are taking Royal Caribbean and sailing on the Empress of the Seas. We chose VA, merely as a something-different port and because we can stroll through Williamsburg when we come back.
As with the Derby, I will have plenty to share when we come back. My sympathies go out to those of you who are either in your last week of school or knee-deep in work projects. This trip is coming at a great time for me to celebrate the end to my teaching stint in Morristown and for Rob to get a break from a busy busy busy case load at work.

Get your man/dad/husband to wear [girlie] colors
If the man in your life is like my husband and gets squeamish around so-called girlie colors, there is a way to transition them into being comfortable donning brighter and usually more complimentary threads.
I have been slowly educating my husband on the mother of all girlie colors: pink and purple! He is fine wearing brights in yellow, orange, and green, but was steering clear of the 2 p's. It wasn't enough to tell him that my step-father, who Rob resembles in many ways, has pink and purple dress shirts and still looks manly!
So, if you are in the same position, and you want to try color out on your man without being forceful and aggressive, start with a tie. My first tool for transition was with the Tommy Hilfiger ties. They provide an assortment of colors, including the 2 p's, but are still very masculine. And go ahead and buy a few...if you buy them from Marshalls. You can usually find the Tommy Hilfiger tie for about $9.99 there. And best of all, Rob loved them. And even though, the women in his office KNEW I picked the pink one for him, he still likes to wear it.
In addition to the Tommy ties, I included Jones New York, also available at Marshalls. I bought Rob 2 of the Economist Dot Silk ties-1 in orange and 1 in purple. Orange has actually become one of his faves, but he will wear the purple on occasion. Regardless of when he wears them , the fact is that he is wearing more color and it is only a matter of time before he wears these colors as a shirt...
Speaking of color shirts, I felt I had achieved a small victory when Rob received a Brooks Brothers shirt from his father and wouldn't you know, it was white with
MAGENTA checks. MAGENTA! And it was one of the best looking shirts I had seen him in and he liked it too! Way to go Rob's Dad! And ladies, if you want to get your man into color, Brooks Brothers has lots of them!
MORAL OF THE STORY: If you want your man/dad/husband to be more comfortable wearing the girlie colors, start him off with a tie from Marshalls and work your way up to a shirt.
Dad likes to eat too!

Big Style in a Small Town: Patina Home
Rob and I took a brief stroll in a fairly new store in Cranbury called Patina Home. It replaced the hometown hardware store, which I will gladly admit that I have shopped in a few times. Anyway...I fell in love with this place from the outside stoop! When you walk in, it is as if you have entered a Hampton's or New England design studio. The home goods in this store are bright, cheerful, full of brilliant color and design, and simply divine.
You can find anything from table linens, to stationary, to coasters, to rugs and bedding. And products from top-notch companies as well. When I get some more time, I will browse more and take pictures, but here is a sampling of the companies you'll find at Patina Home:
- Caspari
- Williamsburg Marketplace Collectibles
- Pine Cone Hill Bedding
- Preppy Cards
- Discoll Design Stationary
- Dash & Albert Rugs
- What's the Occasion Stationary & Gifts
- A. Tierney
- Maude Asbury
Labels: A. Tierney, Caspari, Cranbury, gifts, home goods, maude asbury, Patina Home, pine cone hill, preppry cards
Happy Graduation!
Today is the Commencement ceremony for the senior class at Morristown-Beard School (where I work). I went through the ceremony myself, 10 years ago in the same spot! Those of you with kids in public high school have to wait a few more weeks to wish your kids well, but you should already be thinking what to give them! And please...no new cars! Most kids can't take them to college anyway! Here are some good gifts to give your graduate:
- Personalized Grad Throws: These are a great gift that your child can take to college. Either shop from gift.com or see if your school has their own donning the school colors and buildings. I have one.
- 1 Share of a Blue-Chip Stock: It's a good idea that your child learns how the stock market works and it's more fun to be personally invested, especially in some top companies. Examples of Stocks: GE, Adobe, Amazon.com, AT&T, Barnes & Noble, eBay, Exxon, Coca-Cola, Gap, and many more.
- Oh The Places You Will Go: What is graduation without some wisdom from Dr. Seuss! This is a cute memorabilia piece to send off with your child. Not only is it full of advice and well wishes, it reminds them of the simpler and more joyful times in their childhood...keeping them close to home.
- Laptop: Some schools give students laptops, but if not, it is a good idea to send your child to school with one. They will be on-the-go a lot and not necessarily working in their dorm room. Take from someone who found that working in the school snack bar area was more productive than staying on my floor.
- Digital Camera: If they don't have one now, they will miss a lot without one in college. There is something memorable happening everyday. Those first few weeks of freshman year are the most photo-worthy. New buildings, new people, orientation activities, everything. And with the laptop, they can upload pictures online and share them with family! My personal recommendation is a Canon SD1000 camera. I took it to the Derby and got excellent pics out of it.
- For girls: Pandora Charm Bracelet: Start her off with the bracelet and 1 or 2 charms to represent her and her graduation. As the years move on, you can add to it with birthdays, holidays, etc. Pandora is one of the hottest new bracelet trends.
- For boys: Gifts for guys that I find online could really be for either gender (electronics, etc), but here are 2 that I find are favorites with the boys: Video Game Consoles or Collegiate Gear (fleece blanket, hat, sweatshirt, etc), or if they have a car on campus, a custom detailing or new stereo for the car.

Blockbuster Online-Recently Viewed
I just signed up with Blockbuster Online and I was already impressed that my movies showed up 2 days after I put them in my queue. They sent me 3!
This is not a review, merely just a hey, this is what I just watched and my brief rating:
Notes on a Scandal: ooohhh so good. Judi Dench is caaareeeepy! Kate Blanchett is wonderful as a emotionally vulnerable teacher who strikes up an affair with her student. Judi Dench is a veteran teacher with whom she befriends not without some consequences. The rest is a roller coaster. 5 stars!
High Art: The drug scenes were a little uncomfortable to watch, but it was a good departure for Ally Sheedy before she went all Buried Alive on us. I really like Indie flicks..the kind you find at the film festivals. Don't watch this if you are a little weirded out be drugs and lesbian scenes. It was a powerful movie, but I wasn't as drawn into it like Notes. 3 1/2 stars.
Next up: Borat!
In my queue: I Capture the Castle, Catch and Release, Because I Said So, Dead Girl, Queen, Brick, Forty Shades of Blue, All the Real Girls, and I'm With Lucy.
**If you've seen any in my queue and have any comments, please feel free...
"If you could tell your high school self" Tag-Game
This weekend is the Commencement ceremony for the high school I teach at (I'm in the middle school and our Moving-Up ceremony is Friday). I decided to start a Tag-game called: "If you could tell your high school self 5 things, what would they be?" The rules are the same for all other Blog-Tag games.
List 5 things you would tell your high school self,
Tag 5 other people to be 'it.'
Here are my 5 things:
1) I would tell myself where I could buy a flat-iron and highly suggest I use it. Thick and frizzy hair was not fun in high school. Oh and the grunge thing? Don't do it...it's not you...your not "dark and twisty." And that Sesame Street craze? Leave it for the kiddies.
2) Try Pilates or at least see a nutritionist, again. You don't want to wait until senior year to figure out a way to healthy living.
3) Hey, guess what, there are careers out there for people who like Layout, Design, etc. It's not a dead industry. Look into it!
4) Yeah so, it's not necessary to like every boy who is in your class. There are other ways to occupy your time...like say....actually...without a car or a 21-year old license, there really isn't that much better to do with your time in high school. But lay off the Frappuccinos...they taste good but they are sooo high in calories and fat. One a day is not in moderation.
5) Negotiate with the 'rents to try having a job during the school year. You want to learn budgeting both time and money. These are really essential qualities that you will want to learn much earlier than your 20s.
Ok...now it's your turn: Megan Garnhum at A Girl Must Shop, Maria & Stefano at Baaahhhh Project, Deb at Surviving NJ, Michele at Online Shopping Bargains, Whiplashgirlchild at Fashion Under $100, and Team Sugar at PopSugar.com.
Happy World Environment Day!
In honor of today, June 5th, being World Environment Day, I'd like to direct your "green" eyes to the new site put together by Rachel McAdams and friends (yes, the Notebook star herself).
Green is Sexy, is the eco-awareness site that the 3 friends-Megan, Rachel, and Didi- launched after they realized that they spent everyday talking on the subject. With the help of a tech-savvy friend, their site launched offering readers: books on the environment, tips for 'going green', products and links they 'heart', and the simple things that people do now to make a big change in the future.
And why is caring for the environment sexy? Hmmm...caring is a sexy attribute in a person, the environment, when in good condition, is sexy, and caring for the environment is a sexy habit of mind. Check it out!
Mrs. Mo's Neighbor
Check out the Frenchtowner, an "online travel guide to Bucks County, PA, Hunterdon County, NJ, Cape May, NJ, Savannah, GA and beyond."
This site is the go-to guide for visiting, lodging, family events, restaurants, and more. Instead of searching out community sites for Lambertville, New Hope, Flemington and other nearby destinations, just come here for your needs.
Make sure to hop over to their blog for more features on NJ events and other Blogs (like mine!)
Shout Out!
It's been way to long since I've done my Sunday Shout Out! and yeah, I realize it is Monday, but close enough! This morning I am trying to gear up to do all of my grading and comments for the end of the year and I decided instead to browse NJWeblogs.com for some Shout Out worthy blogs. Here they are in order of discovery:
The Blog of South Brunswick
I really like the premise of this blog and I think more communities should jump on the bandwagon. This blog is organized by the South Brunswick Post and it gives residents the opportunity to comment on anything going on in the community.
Rt 55
Here are the random happenings in Millville, NJ, just south of Vineland in Cumberland County. From Kids' murals in town to the Millville Bikefest, this blogger captures a lot of the events in town. However, not only does he capture the good of Millville, he is also proactive in trying to bring more attention to the neglect from landlords holding property in town. Here's a sample letter that he sent to one of those "slumlords" as he puts it. More power to him. I'm not that brave to do it, but sometimes you just get tired of the despair around town.
*Mo's Top Pick: Tommy Eats
This guy is doing exactly what I need more time to do! As a hobby, he travels around NJ and NY, trying out pubs and restaurants and blogging about them. He also offers cooking tips and wine advice. I'm still getting the courage to ask places I go if I can take pictures of their products and food. Thanks for the tips Tommy!

Mrs. Mo's Review: 19 Minutes, by Jodi Picoult
I just finished an amazing and shocking book. Nineteen Minutes, by Jodi Picoult, is one of those books that you don't want to put down. I'm not an avid reader, but when I find an author that writes with such vivid reality and emotion, I am sucked in!
I can only supply a brief synopsis without giving away too much information. In short, Nineteen Minutes chronicles the story of a school shooting in New Hampshire. Picoult uses flashbacks to paint a picture of the shooter's childhood that no parent wants for their child. I was surprised by how easily I felt sorry for the boy because I see that frustration in some of my own students who get picked on. However, as the prosecution points out in the trial, most kids who are bullied don't shoot people. If only we could save those who want to.
In between the flashback chapters, the reader is led through the aftermath of the shooting up to the trial and verdict.
Despite the sensitive nature of this subject, Nineteen Minutes is a book that mothers and teachers should read. It makes you think about behavior between kids, reactions by adults, and how we can help a child who might be in danger.
I started reading the book on Memorial Day Weekend and just finished it yesterday. Next, I'm onto My Sister's Keeper, also by Jodi Picoult. Stay tuned...
LeAnn Rimes loves Tony
No, not Tony Romo...Tony Cachere's!
I was reading her feature in Shape Magazine and she mentioned that she cooks with my favorite seasoning ever! She loves spicing up her healthy meals with Tony Cachere's Creole Seasoning. Like her, I think it is the only thing you need to spice up a meal. I have the Tony Cachere's More Spice and I use it on fish and chicken (within reason). With fish, I sprinkle it on light fillets like: perch, flounder, tilapia, etc. Then, I serve the fish with a peach salsa (I get Whole Food's fresh salsa and mix in chopped peaches). The sweet and the spicy is a perfect match!
I got my Tony Cachere's spice at McCaffrey's in West Windsor. However, I am sure you can find him an any local supermarket. If you use Tony, share your thoughts and/or recipes with us!
